Jalandhar, September 30, 2026: BJP worker Rajnish Sehgal died after suddenly falling ill while attending Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s rally in Jalandhar on Wednesday, casting a shadow over the party’s major anti-drug gathering.
According to local reports, Sehgal’s health suddenly deteriorated around the time he was arriving for the rally. He suffered a medical emergency and was taken for treatment, but could not be saved. A local report said he suffered a heart attack. The final medical cause of death should be treated as subject to official confirmation.
Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon later paid tribute to Rajnish Sehgal from the rally stage and expressed condolences over his death.
The rally was organised at Paragpur near NH-44 in Jalandhar as the concluding event of the BJP’s statewide Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra. The campaign began on September 18 and travelled through all 117 Assembly constituencies of Punjab, covering nearly 4,000 kilometres through four different routes before culminating in Jalandhar.
Large-scale arrangements had been made for the event, with thousands of party workers and supporters expected to arrive from across Punjab. The rally venue covered around 60 acres, while the BJP had arranged buses and parking facilities for supporters travelling from different districts.
Earlier reports from the venue said a person suddenly collapsed near the entrance while security personnel were checking people entering the rally ground. Security and medical personnel immediately assisted him and shifted him to hospital by ambulance. At the time of the initial report, his identity had not yet been confirmed.
Amit Shah addressed the gathering as part of the culmination of the BJP’s anti-drug campaign in Punjab.
The death of Rajnish Sehgal brought a sombre moment to the political programme, with party leaders expressing condolences to his family and supporters.
