Guwahati, September 30, 2026: India captain Shubman Gill produced a record-breaking double century as India completed an extraordinary chase of 406 against the West Indies in the second ODI at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, winning by eight wickets and taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Gill remained unbeaten on a sensational 223 off 133 balls, smashing 26 fours and eight sixes in an innings that rewrote several ODI records. India reached the 406-run target in just 43.3 overs, completing the chase with 39 balls remaining.
The Indian captain reached his double century in only 117 balls, making it the fastest double hundred in men's ODI cricket. He surpassed Ishan Kishan's previous mark of 126 balls, set against Bangladesh in 2022.
It was Gill's second ODI double century after his 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad in January 2023. He also became only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to register multiple double centuries in ODI cricket. Rohit currently holds the record with three ODI double hundreds.
Gill was not alone in India's breathtaking chase. Rohit Sharma struck a superb 101 off 75 deliveries, giving India the explosive start required to make a seemingly impossible target look achievable.
The Gill-Rohit combination dismantled the West Indies bowling attack and ensured that the required run rate never became overwhelming. Their huge opening partnership laid the foundation for one of the most remarkable successful chases in international cricket.
Earlier, West Indies had produced a batting performance that would normally have been enough to win almost any ODI.
The visitors piled up a massive 405 for seven in 50 overs, their highest-ever total in ODI cricket. Three West Indies batters registered centuries in the same innings — John Campbell scored 101, captain Shai Hope made 104, while Amir Jangoo top-scored with 114.
With 406 required for victory, India faced a task they had never previously accomplished in ODI cricket.
Before Wednesday's match, India's highest successful ODI chase was 360, achieved against Australia in Jaipur in 2013. No Indian team had ever successfully chased a target of 400 or more in a men's ODI.
Gill and Rohit changed that emphatically.
India became only the second team in ODI history to successfully chase a 400-plus target. The previous successful 400-plus chase came in Johannesburg in 2006, when South Africa famously scored 438 for nine to overhaul Australia's 434 for four.
The 406-run chase is now India's highest successful run chase in ODI history and the second-highest successful chase ever recorded in men's ODI cricket.
The victory also sealed the three-match ODI series for India with one match still remaining.
India had won the opening ODI in Thiruvananthapuram by eight wickets after centuries from Gill and Virat Kohli. Gill scored 110 in that contest, while Kohli remained unbeaten on 139 as India chased 296 comfortably.
Gill's performances in the opening two matches have therefore played a decisive role in India's series victory. After scoring 110 in the first ODI, his unbeaten 223 in Guwahati gave him consecutive centuries and one of the most memorable innings of his international career.
For West Indies, the defeat was particularly difficult after producing their highest ODI total and becoming the first West Indies side to have three centurions in the same ODI innings. But on a remarkable night in Guwahati, even 405 proved insufficient as Gill led India into the ODI record books.
India now lead the three-match series 2-0, with the final ODI scheduled to be played in New Chandigarh on October 3.
