DERA BABA NANAK, October 19, 2026: Amandeep Kaur, wife of jailed Jagdeep Singh alias Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, has announced her entry into Punjab’s electoral politics, declaring that she intends to contest the next Assembly election from the Dera Baba Nanak constituency in Gurdaspur district.

Kaur made the announcement during a public gathering at Sarafkot village, where supporters and local representatives were present. Her declaration brings a new entrant into the political landscape of the border constituency as preparations gradually begin for Punjab’s next Assembly election.

Speaking about her decision, Kaur said she had returned to Punjab from the United States and wanted to work among the people of Dera Baba Nanak. She had been pursuing dental studies in the US before deciding to focus on public and political activity in Punjab.

Kaur presented herself as having deep personal ties with the constituency and said her decision to enter politics was driven by a desire to work on issues affecting local residents.

She highlighted employment opportunities, drug abuse, education and healthcare facilities among the areas she wants to focus on. Kaur argued that young people in the border belt need better employment prospects and stronger educational infrastructure if long-term social problems are to be addressed.

Healthcare was another issue raised during her public interaction. She questioned why residents of the constituency often have to travel to larger cities for specialised medical treatment and called for stronger healthcare facilities closer to home.

Her electoral platform, however, is not yet formally settled. Kaur has confirmed her intention to contest from Dera Baba Nanak but has not announced whether she will join an established political party or enter the contest as an Independent candidate.

For the time being, she has associated her political activity with the “Jaggu Bhagwanpuria Team”, a group that has also been involved in local welfare activities in the constituency.

Kaur said social-service initiatives undertaken by the group would continue irrespective of the eventual election result. She referred to assistance being extended in areas such as education and support for economically weaker families.

Her husband, Jagdeep Singh alias Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, is currently in jail and faces multiple criminal cases. Those proceedings remain separate from Amandeep Kaur’s decision to enter electoral politics, and her candidature will have to be assessed independently on her own political programme and public campaign.

Kaur has also publicly objected to her husband being defined only by the “gangster” label, saying she wants people to see him by his given name and personal identity. Her remarks represent her own position and do not alter the status of criminal cases being dealt with through the legal system.

The announcement is likely to draw attention in Dera Baba Nanak because the constituency has traditionally seen intense competition among established political organisations and local leaders.

However, Kaur is still at the announcement stage rather than the formal nomination stage. Candidate nominations, party tickets and final electoral line-ups will only become clear closer to the Assembly election.

Her next political moves—including whether she joins a party, contests independently and how she builds an organisation across the constituency—will determine the shape of her campaign in the months ahead.
