JALANDHAR, October 19, 2026: A bus suffered an apparent brake failure on the flyover near Jalandhar Bus Stand on Monday, triggering a multi-vehicle collision and bringing traffic on the busy stretch to a temporary standstill.

According to the preliminary account given by traffic police, the bus developed a braking problem while on the flyover. The vehicle subsequently began moving backwards and struck three cars travelling or positioned behind it.

The sudden movement of the bus gave motorists little time to react. One of the cars involved was reportedly being driven by a woman when the situation unfolded, while the impact left the vehicles with visible damage.

The collision immediately disrupted traffic on the flyover, with a long queue of vehicles building up as the damaged bus and cars occupied part of the carriageway.

Traffic police reached the spot shortly after receiving information about the accident. Officers moved the bus to the side of the road and worked to clear the affected vehicles so that normal traffic movement could be restored.

Despite the damage to the vehicles, no loss of life was reported in the accident. The incident nevertheless caused concern among commuters because of the busy location and the possibility of a more serious collision had the bus continued rolling backwards.

The drivers and other people connected with the vehicles were taken for further questioning as police began examining the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Investigators are expected to determine whether the accident resulted solely from a mechanical brake failure or whether any other factor contributed to the loss of control. The condition and maintenance history of the bus may also form part of the inquiry, particularly as the initial police account points towards brake failure as the immediate cause of the accident.

The damaged vehicles were eventually removed from the main traffic lane, allowing movement on the flyover to return towards normal.Further action will depend on the findings of the police inquiry and any mechanical inspection carried out on the bus.
