JALANDHAR, October 23, 2026: Plans to set up Jalandhar’s temporary Diwali firecracker market at Raowali village on Pathankot Road have run into a major legal hurdle after objections raised by local residents reached the court.

The temporary market had been proposed on a large parcel of land at Raowali after the traditional firecracker market could no longer be accommodated at Burlton Park due to ongoing development work there.

Preparations had been underway to shift licensed firecracker sellers to the new location ahead of Diwali. The proposed site was expected to accommodate temporary stalls under safety and licensing conditions prescribed by the district administration.

The plan, however, faced opposition from residents of Raowali and surrounding areas. Local residents raised concerns over the suitability and safety of establishing a large firecracker market close to inhabited and commercial areas.

The dispute subsequently reached the court, where the proposed location was challenged. According to information surrounding the proceedings, the court has restrained the firecracker market from being established at the disputed Raowali site.

The development has now created uncertainty for traders who had been preparing to operate temporary stalls there during the Diwali season.

It is important, however, to distinguish the dispute over the Raowali market location from a complete ban on the purchase or use of firecrackers throughout Jalandhar.

At present, the development concerns the proposed temporary market at the contested site. Whether the district administration will identify another authorised location, modify the existing arrangement or take further legal steps will depend on the court order and subsequent administrative decisions.

Residents should therefore avoid assuming that all firecracker sales across Jalandhar have automatically been prohibited.

Any legal sale of firecrackers would still remain subject to valid licences, approved locations, applicable environmental restrictions and directions issued by the courts and government authorities.

The situation is particularly significant for Jalandhar’s firecracker traders, as the city has traditionally seen a dedicated temporary market established before Diwali. The shift away from Burlton Park had already forced authorities and traders to search for an alternative site this year.

With the Raowali location now facing a legal hurdle, attention will turn to the district administration’s next move and whether another location can be approved before Diwali.

Further clarity is expected once the detailed written court order and the administration’s response are formally available.
