JALANDHAR, October 22, 2026: Jalandhar Municipal Corporation has intensified its drive against encroachments across the city, giving people occupying hutments in Bhagat Singh Colony three days to remove the structures voluntarily.

The action was initiated on Wednesday when a Municipal Corporation team reached the area and made public announcements informing the occupants about the deadline. The drive was carried out under the supervision of officials from the civic body’s Tehbazari branch.

According to details of the municipal action, the team was led by Tehbazari Superintendent Kulwinder Singh Nagra. Residents and occupants were informed that the identified structures should be removed within the stipulated period.

The Municipal Corporation has also made similar announcements regarding hutments situated opposite Maksudan and near the railway tracks beneath the DAV College bridge. These locations are also under scrutiny as the civic body moves to clear areas it has identified as encroachments.

The action in Bhagat Singh Colony comes after complaints concerning the structures in the area were brought before municipal authorities. The civic body has now moved towards giving occupants time to remove them before considering further enforcement action.

At this stage, the three-day notice is effectively an opportunity for voluntary removal. Any subsequent demolition or enforcement action would depend on the Municipal Corporation’s assessment after expiry of the deadline and the applicable procedure.

The civic drive comes at a time when Jalandhar is undergoing extensive cleaning, road-repair and beautification work ahead of the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament, which begins on October 27.

Municipal authorities have been directed to improve cleanliness, roads, streetlights, sewerage and other civic infrastructure, particularly along important routes and areas connected with the international sporting event.

As part of the broader drive, a Municipal Corporation team also removed several structures described by officials as permanent encroachments on Gulab Devi Road.

Street vendors have separately been instructed not to block pedestrian pathways. The civic body has asked them to position carts in a manner that leaves footpaths accessible to people walking through the area.

The Municipal Corporation’s action is expected to continue at other identified locations over the coming days as the administration works to clear public roads and footpaths and improve traffic and pedestrian movement.

For residents of Bhagat Singh Colony affected by the announcement, the immediate deadline remains three days. Further action will depend on whether the structures identified by the civic body are removed within that period.
