JALANDHAR, October 23, 2026: Two schoolchildren were injured in a road incident in Jalandhar’s West area on Friday morning after an auto-rickshaw moved forward while the children were walking past it on their way to school. Nearby residents rushed to their aid after hearing cries for help.
CCTV footage connected with the incident has also surfaced. The video appears to show the two children walking through a narrow street and passing close to a stationary auto-rickshaw. Moments later, the vehicle begins moving and the children come into contact with it.
Residents in the area immediately gathered at the spot and worked together to get the children away from the vehicle. Both children were subsequently attended to for their injuries. According to the initial information available, one of the children suffered more significant injuries, although their detailed medical condition has not yet been officially confirmed.
The CCTV footage is expected to be important in establishing the precise sequence of events. It appears that the auto-rickshaw began moving shortly after the children had passed in front of or alongside the vehicle, leaving them little time to move away.
People present at the scene reportedly stopped the driver from leaving after the incident. Local residents also confronted him over what they described as careless driving and later informed police about the matter.
According to the initial account, a complaint has been made to police. However, details regarding any formal case or further legal action against the driver have not yet been confirmed.
The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety in residential streets during school hours, when large numbers of children travel on foot through narrow lanes alongside cars, motorcycles and auto-rickshaws.
Drivers operating in such areas are expected to check their surroundings carefully before moving their vehicles, particularly where children or pedestrians may be passing close by.
At this stage, responsibility for the accident will ultimately depend on the police inquiry, statements from those present and examination of the complete CCTV footage. The video alone should not be treated as a final legal determination of fault.
The identities of the children have been withheld due to their age.
