Chandigarh/Jalandhar, October 2, 2026: Congress has appointed Pargat Singh, former Indian hockey captain and MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment, as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, bringing an end to the uncertainty over who would lead the party’s state unit ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
Pargat Singh succeeds Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who stepped down as Punjab Congress president after meeting senior party leadership in New Delhi.
The leadership change comes at an important stage for the Punjab Congress as political parties begin strengthening their organisations and preparing their strategies for the next Assembly election.
Pargat Singh is currently the MLA from the Jalandhar Cantonment Assembly constituency and has previously served as Punjab’s Education and Sports Minister. Before entering politics, he built a prominent sporting career as captain of the Indian hockey team and represented the country at the highest international level. He is also a recipient of the Padma Shri and Arjuna Award.
His appointment gives Jalandhar a prominent role in the state Congress organisation at a time when the party is working to strengthen coordination among its senior leaders and grassroots workers.
Before the final decision, several senior Punjab Congress leaders had been discussed for the post. Pargat Singh and former minister Vijay Inder Singla were among the names prominently considered during the leadership consultations.
The Congress leadership ultimately chose Pargat Singh to take charge of the Punjab unit following Warring’s resignation.
Warring had headed the Punjab Congress since 2022, taking charge after the party’s defeat in that year’s Assembly election. His tenure covered the 2024 Lok Sabha election and a period of continued internal debate within the state organisation over leadership, strategy and preparations for the next Assembly contest.
Pargat Singh now takes over a party organisation that includes several senior leaders with significant political experience and their own support bases across Punjab.
His immediate organisational responsibilities are expected to include coordination between the state leadership and district units, strengthening the party structure and preparing the organisation for the coming electoral cycle.
Pargat Singh has previously held organisational responsibilities within Congress as well. The party’s official records list him among its AICC secretaries, and he has also served in senior roles within the Punjab Congress organisation.
The former Olympian entered electoral politics after his sporting and administrative career and has represented Jalandhar Cantonment in the Punjab Assembly.
His appointment also puts a Jalandhar-based leader at the head of one of Punjab’s principal political parties, making the development particularly significant for the Doaba region.
The next phase will focus on how the new Punjab Congress president structures the state organisation and works with the party’s existing leadership ahead of the 2027 Assembly election.
With Pargat Singh now taking charge, Punjab Congress has completed a major leadership transition following Warring’s exit and will move forward under a new state president as preparations for the next electoral contest intensify.
