Phagwara, October 1, 2026: Security was tightened at the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office in Phagwara after a bomb threat was received through the office’s official email account, prompting an immediate police response and a detailed search of the premises.
The threat was reportedly received on Wednesday, ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to nearby Jalandhar, raising concern among the administration and security agencies.
After being alerted about the email, police launched a security operation at the SDM office and surrounding areas.
Bomb-disposal personnel and a dog squad were deployed to inspect the premises for any explosive material or suspicious object.
Officials carried out a thorough search of the office complex and nearby areas as a precautionary measure.
However, no explosive device or suspicious material was recovered during the search.
The threat nevertheless prompted authorities to maintain heightened vigilance around the government office while the circumstances surrounding the email were examined.
The message reportedly referred to the Phagwara SDM office and also contained threats involving other locations, adding to the seriousness with which authorities treated the communication.
Police are now expected to focus on establishing the origin of the threatening email and determining whether it was a genuine security threat or a hoax intended to create fear and disrupt government functioning.
Security-related threat emails have increasingly required authorities to respond with precautionary searches even when no suspicious material is ultimately recovered, as officials must first ensure the safety of employees and visitors.
The Phagwara administration continued to coordinate with police following the security check.
No injuries or property damage were reported in connection with the incident.
Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation into the email and the identity of the person or persons responsible for sending it.
