Chandigarh, October 5, 2026: Punjab is set to witness a noticeable change in weather from October 7 as a fresh spell of rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected to affect several parts of the state.
After largely stable conditions on October 5 and 6, weather activity is forecast to increase from Wednesday, particularly across northern and eastern Punjab.
The latest forecast indicates the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong surface winds at isolated places between October 7 and 9.
Wind speeds could reach around 30 to 40 km per hour during thunderstorm activity in affected areas.
Yellow Alert for Several Districts on October 7
According to the district-level forecast issued ahead of the weather change, eight districts are likely to be among the most affected on October 7.
These include Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, SAS Nagar (Mohali), Fatehgarh Sahib and Patiala.
Residents in these areas could experience thunder, lightning and gusty winds, with rain possible at isolated locations.
The weather is expected to remain comparatively quieter across several western and southern districts during the initial phase of the spell.
Areas including Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Muktsar, Bathinda and parts of the central Punjab belt were not included in the main October 7 warning zone in the earlier district forecast.
Rain Belt Could Expand on October 8
The weather system is expected to become more widespread on October 8.
Rain and thunderstorm activity could extend across parts of Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Mohali and Fatehgarh Sahib.
Strong winds of around 30–40 km/h and lightning may accompany the showers at isolated places.
In comparison, southwest Punjab districts including Fazilka, Muktsar, Bathinda, Mansa, Sangrur, Barnala, Moga and Faridkot were not placed under the same warning in the earlier district-wise outlook.
The exact location and intensity of thunderstorms can change quickly, so district-level warnings may be revised as the weather system approaches.
Latest Forecast Extends Warning to October 9
The most recent weather bulletin issued on October 5 has also extended the broader thunderstorm and lightning warning for Punjab into October 9.
This means the unsettled spell may continue for around three days rather than being limited only to October 7 and 8.
Conditions are currently expected to improve from October 10, with no major statewide warning indicated in the latest outlook for October 10 and 11.
Fresh Weather System to Affect Northwest India
The expected change is linked to a fresh weather system approaching northwestern India.
Such systems can bring cloud formation, scattered rainfall, thunderstorms and temporary strong winds across Punjab and neighbouring regions.
The approaching spell is also likely to provide some relief from relatively warm daytime conditions experienced during recent days.
Where rainfall occurs, maximum temperatures may fall and mornings and nights could begin to feel slightly cooler.
What About Jalandhar?
For residents of Jalandhar, the current district-specific warning is less severe than for parts of northeastern Punjab.
Jalandhar was not among the eight districts highlighted in the October 7 yellow-alert list.
However, weather conditions across neighbouring districts such as Hoshiarpur and Nawanshahr could influence cloud cover and local conditions around Jalandhar as the system develops.
Residents should therefore continue checking updated forecasts, particularly on October 7 and 8, because thunderstorm warnings can change at short notice.
Farmers Should Keep an Eye on Forecast
The change in weather is particularly important for farmers as harvesting and other agricultural activities continue across Punjab.
Gusty winds and thunderstorms can temporarily affect standing crops, harvested produce kept in open areas and agricultural operations.
Farmers may therefore benefit from keeping harvested produce protected from unexpected rain and monitoring local weather updates before planning outdoor work.
Lightning and Strong Winds Need Caution
Thunderstorms can produce short periods of intense wind even when overall rainfall remains light.
During lightning activity, people should avoid exposed open areas and take shelter in safe buildings.
Loose outdoor material can also be affected by sudden gusts.
The weather situation will become clearer as the system approaches Punjab, and district-level alerts could be updated depending on its movement.
For now, the key forecast is that Punjab’s weather is expected to begin changing from October 7, with thunderstorms, lightning, rain and gusty winds possible across several districts through October 9.
