Jalandhar, October 7, 2026: With the festive season approaching, authorities in Jalandhar have stepped up checks on food products, leading to the recovery of a substantial quantity of desi ghee and refined oil from a vehicle intercepted on Jandu Singha Road.

During a checking operation, a CIA Staff team stopped a vehicle and inspected the goods being transported. Officials reportedly found several containers of desi ghee and refined oil inside the vehicle and considered the consignment suspicious, following which the Health Department was informed for further examination.

The vehicle was subsequently taken into custody and the food safety team collected samples of the products. Around 250 kilograms of desi ghee and 35 tins of refined oil were found in the consignment. The samples will now undergo laboratory testing to determine whether the products comply with prescribed food quality and safety standards.

Officials have not yet declared the recovered products adulterated or unsafe. Their quality will be determined only after the laboratory examination is completed. Further legal or departmental action is expected to depend on the findings of the test reports.

Inspector Pushp Bali, associated with the CIA Staff operation, said the vehicle was intercepted while the team was conducting checking on Jandu Singha Road. After the tins and containers raised suspicion during inspection, officials from the Health Department were called to examine the material and collect samples.

The driver of the vehicle was also taken in for questioning. He was identified as Mukesh Kumar, a resident of Burj Dhilwan village in Mansa district. Police are examining the source of the consignment, where it was being transported and the intended destination of the food products.

Investigators are also checking the driver's previous record in connection with the supply of food products. Any previous case or allegation, however, remains separate from the present recovery and does not by itself establish that the products seized in Tuesday's operation were adulterated.

The action assumes greater importance ahead of the festive season, when consumption of sweets, dairy products, ghee and edible oils traditionally rises considerably. Increased demand during this period often leads food safety authorities to conduct additional inspections of manufacturing units, storage facilities, transport vehicles and retail establishments.

Desi ghee is widely used by sweet shops, restaurants and households during the festive period, making its quality an important area of food safety monitoring. Officials are therefore expected to continue checking food consignments and collecting samples wherever there are concerns regarding quality, labelling, storage or source.

The Health Department's laboratory report will be crucial in determining the next stage of the case. If the samples meet prescribed standards, the matter will be treated accordingly. If any violation or adulteration is detected, action can be initiated under the applicable food safety provisions after completion of the required procedure.

Authorities have also urged businesses involved in the manufacture, transport and sale of food products to maintain proper records and comply with food safety standards during the high-demand festive period.

The latest recovery forms part of increased surveillance ahead of the festive season in Jalandhar. Further details regarding the quality of the desi ghee and refined oil are expected after laboratory test results become available.
