Jalandhar, October 14, 2026: Congress leaders and workers staged a protest at Shri Ram Chowk in Jalandhar, raising concerns over what they described as worsening civic conditions across several parts of the city, particularly damaged roads, poor water quality and non-functional streetlights.

The demonstration was held under the leadership of District Congress Committee (Urban) president Rajinder Beri, with party representatives and local residents gathering at the busy city junction to draw attention to problems they said had remained unresolved despite repeated complaints.

Congress leaders alleged that deteriorated roads were making everyday travel difficult for residents and increasing problems for motorists, particularly in areas where road surfaces have been damaged for an extended period. They demanded that repair and resurfacing work be taken up on priority.

Water supply was another major issue raised during the protest. Party representatives claimed that residents in some localities were receiving dirty or poor-quality water and called on the civic authorities to inspect supply lines and address complaints without further delay.

The protesters also highlighted streetlighting problems, alleging that lights remained non-functional at several locations. They argued that poorly lit roads create inconvenience for residents and can also become a public-safety concern after dark.

Jalandhar North MLA Bawa Henry was among the political leaders present at the demonstration. Councillors and Congress representatives including Pawan Kumar, Gurbinder Bunty, Sherry Chadha, Jasdeep Sonu, Jasleen Sethi and several other local leaders and workers also participated.

Speakers at the protest said their focus was on basic municipal services rather than large development announcements. They maintained that reliable water supply, properly maintained roads and functioning streetlights were fundamental services residents should be able to expect from the civic administration.

The Congress delegation called upon the Municipal Corporation and concerned administrative departments to take stock of the affected areas and prepare a time-bound plan for resolving the problems raised during the demonstration.

The party also sought greater accountability over maintenance work in the city and said complaints from residents should be addressed before civic problems become more difficult or expensive to resolve.

The protest reflects a continuing political debate over Jalandhar’s civic infrastructure, with opposition leaders increasingly raising local issues relating to sanitation, roads, sewerage, water supply and public lighting.

At the same time, the allegations made during the demonstration represent the Congress party’s position. The condition of individual roads, water-supply complaints and streetlights may vary by locality, and any specific administrative response or repair schedule will depend on the concerned civic authorities.

The protesters said they would continue raising neighbourhood-level issues if residents’ complaints remained unresolved.
