Jalandhar, October 15, 2026: The Jalandhar district administration has decided to intensify surveillance in areas identified as drug hotspots, with Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia directing officials to maintain continuous monitoring and step up preventive action against the illegal sale and supply of narcotics.
The directions were issued during a review meeting held at the District Administrative Complex as part of the ongoing anti-drug campaign. Senior officials from the civil administration and police discussed the situation in sensitive areas and measures required to strengthen enforcement at the ground level.
Jalandhar Rural SSP Harvinder Singh Virk was present during the review, where officials were asked to personally visit identified hotspots instead of relying only on routine reports. The administration wants regular field-level assessment so that suspicious activity can be identified and acted upon without delay.
Special attention has been sought for vacant buildings, poorly lit locations and other isolated places that could potentially be misused for illegal activities. Officials have been asked to identify such areas and improve lighting wherever required.
The Deputy Commissioner also called for greater use of CCTV surveillance at sensitive points. Police patrolling is to be strengthened around identified hotspots, while surprise checking and search operations are expected to continue in areas where drug-related activity has previously been reported.
Officials have also been asked to consider permanent checking points at locations requiring sustained monitoring. The aim is to ensure that enforcement does not remain limited to occasional raids but continues through regular police presence and surveillance.
The administration has further directed teams to keep a close watch on establishments suspected of being linked with the unauthorised sale of intoxicating or controlled substances. Any action against an individual or establishment, however, will depend on evidence and the applicable legal procedure.
Alongside enforcement, the district administration is placing emphasis on public participation in the anti-drug campaign. Officials have been asked to involve local organisations and community groups in awareness activities so that information about drug trafficking and substance abuse can reach neighbourhoods at the grassroots level.
The meeting also focused on preventive measures for young people. The administration stressed the need to expand opportunities in sports, skill development and other constructive activities, particularly in villages and areas considered vulnerable to substance abuse.
Efforts to improve playgrounds, libraries, open gyms and similar community facilities were also discussed as part of a broader strategy aimed at keeping young people connected with healthy activities and employment-oriented training.
SSP Harvinder Singh Virk said the rural police would continue strict action against those involved in drug trafficking while strengthening monitoring of sensitive locations. Commissionerate Police officials also briefed the meeting on ongoing search operations and field-level action within the city.
The administration’s latest directions indicate that Jalandhar’s anti-drug strategy will increasingly combine police enforcement, hotspot surveillance, community participation and rehabilitation-focused measures, rather than depending on raids alone.
Officials have been asked to maintain coordination between departments and ensure that identified hotspots remain under sustained watch as the district continues its campaign against drug trafficking and substance abuse.
