Jalandhar, October 7, 2026: The uncertainty surrounding the location of Jalandhar’s temporary firecracker market appears to have ended after the district administration cleared a site at Raowali village on Pathankot Road. Around 5.5 acres of land has been identified for the seasonal market, giving firecracker traders a designated location to operate from during the upcoming festive period. The decision comes after discussions over possible locations continued for several weeks as traders and the authorities looked for a site capable of meeting safety, traffic and accessibility requirements.

The approved land at Raowali is expected to accommodate temporary shops under a regulated layout rather than allowing scattered sale points around the city. Preparations at the site will now have to be completed before commercial activity can begin. The land will need to be made suitable for temporary stalls, parking and controlled movement of visitors while ensuring that emergency vehicles can reach the market without obstruction. The approval is therefore an important step, but the market will become fully operational only after the required arrangements and safety conditions are put in place.

Safety has been made a major part of the administration’s conditions for the temporary market. Shops will have to maintain prescribed distances from the National Highway, residential areas and other sensitive locations. Space between individual stalls has also been specified to reduce congestion and improve emergency access. Fire-safety arrangements, including firefighting equipment and an adequate water supply, are expected to remain mandatory throughout the period in which the market operates.

Traffic management will also play an important role because the selected site is located along the busy Pathankot Road corridor. The movement of customers and goods is expected to be controlled through designated entry and exit points, while access from the highway side is to remain available for emergency services such as ambulances and fire tenders. Organisers will be responsible for ensuring that vehicles entering the market do not create unnecessary congestion on the adjoining road network, particularly during evening and weekend rush periods.

According to the conditions linked with the proposed market arrangement, temporary stalls are required to maintain a significant buffer from the highway, nearby residential areas and fuel stations. Additional separation has been prescribed from factories and parking areas, while adequate space must also be maintained between adjoining shops. These restrictions are intended to create a more organised market layout and allow emergency teams to move quickly if any situation requiring immediate attention develops.

The market is expected to function during regulated daytime and evening hours, with the reported permitted sales window running from 10 am to 7.30 pm. Traders will still be required to comply with applicable licensing requirements and other directions issued by the authorities for the sale and storage of permitted firecrackers. The approval of the location itself does not remove the responsibility of individual sellers and organisers to meet the conditions attached to temporary licences and festival-season safety regulations.

Finding a suitable location had remained a challenge this year, with different sites being considered before Raowali emerged as the workable option. The availability of a larger open area outside the most congested parts of the city was an important consideration, particularly because a temporary firecracker market requires additional space for customers, parking and emergency movement. With administrative clearance now reported for the Raowali site, the focus is likely to shift from the search for land to preparing the ground and arranging the market in accordance with the prescribed conditions.

The development is significant for both traders and residents because Jalandhar traditionally witnesses increased commercial activity in the weeks leading up to the festive season. A designated market can help concentrate temporary firecracker sales at a regulated location rather than allowing unplanned clusters to develop across different areas. At the same time, the location on Pathankot Road means traffic planning and safe access will remain important once customer movement increases.

The final readiness of the Raowali market will depend on how quickly the site is prepared and whether all required safety, parking and traffic arrangements are completed. Authorities and organisers are expected to keep a close watch on compliance once the market becomes operational. For residents planning to visit the market, official directions regarding permitted timings, access routes and any further restrictions issued closer to the festive period will remain important.
