CHANDIGARH, October 8, 2026: A fresh controversy has emerged around Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira after the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association reportedly passed a condemnation resolution over remarks attributed to him concerning lawyers and members of the legal profession.

The development follows comments allegedly made by Khaira a few days ago that drew objections from sections of the legal fraternity. Lawyers who objected to the remarks are reported to have viewed them as inappropriate and damaging to the dignity of the profession, following which the matter was taken up at the Bar Association level.

According to information available about the development, the Association discussed the controversy and reportedly adopted a resolution condemning the remarks attributed to the Bholath legislator. The precise language of the resolution, however, has not yet been independently available through the Association’s publicly indexed records.

The controversy has attracted attention because criticism in this instance is coming from members of the legal profession rather than from Khaira’s political opponents. The Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association represents advocates practising before the High Court in Chandigarh and regularly addresses matters affecting its members and the functioning of the legal community.

At the centre of the dispute are comments attributed to Khaira about lawyers. Since the complete original statement and the Bar Association’s full resolution are not publicly available in independently verifiable form at the time of publication, it would be premature to reproduce or characterise the remarks beyond what has been formally established.

It is also important to distinguish the present controversy from other legal and political matters involving Khaira. The reported Bar Association resolution relates specifically to his recent remarks concerning lawyers and should not be confused with earlier proceedings or political resolutions involving the Congress MLA.

The development comes at a time when Khaira remains an active opposition voice in Punjab politics and has frequently been involved in sharp exchanges with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party. That wider political background, however, does not determine the merits of the present dispute, which centres on the concerns reportedly raised by members of the Bar.

A condemnation resolution by a professional body expresses its institutional objection to particular conduct or remarks. It should not, by itself, be interpreted as a judicial finding, criminal conviction or determination of legal liability against the person concerned.

At the time of publication, a detailed response from Khaira specifically addressing the reported Bar Association resolution was not independently available. His version of events and any clarification regarding the remarks would be important to presenting a complete account of the controversy.

If Khaira disputes the interpretation of his comments, apologises, clarifies his position or challenges the resolution, that response should also form part of subsequent coverage so that readers receive both sides of the matter.

The complete text of the Bar Association’s resolution will also be important in establishing whether it merely records condemnation or contains any additional demands or decisions. Until that document is publicly available, claims of suspension, boycott, disciplinary action or any other penalty should not be reported without separate confirmation.

The episode highlights the sensitivity surrounding public comments about professional communities, particularly when they come from elected representatives. At the same time, accurate reporting requires a clear distinction between criticism, allegations and legally established facts.

Further clarity is expected once the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association formally releases or circulates the resolution and Khaira issues a response to the concerns raised by members of the legal fraternity.
