New Delhi, October 6, 2026: Strong earthquake tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR and several parts of North India on Tuesday night after a magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district.

The earthquake was recorded at around 10:23 pm, with its epicentre located in Chamoli at a depth of approximately 13 kilometres. The epicentral region was reported to be around 50 kilometres south of Joshimath.

The tremors were felt across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and several parts of Uttarakhand. Residents in a number of areas reported noticeable shaking, prompting some people to step outside their homes as a precaution.

Shaking was also reported in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh, indicating that the tremors were felt across a wide portion of northern India.

In Uttarakhand, residents in areas including Chamoli and surrounding hill districts experienced stronger tremors because of their proximity to the epicentre. Authorities were monitoring the situation following the earthquake.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage at the time of publication. Local authorities were continuing to assess whether any minor damage had occurred in areas closer to the epicentre.

International earthquake-monitoring agencies recorded the event at a slightly different magnitude, with some estimating it at around 5.1. Such small variations can occur because different monitoring networks use different data and calculation methods.

Uttarakhand lies in a seismically active Himalayan region and regularly experiences earthquakes of varying intensity. Residents have been advised to remain alert for official updates and avoid relying on unverified social-media claims regarding aftershocks or damage.

Further details are expected as seismic agencies complete their assessment and district administrations report from affected areas.
