New Delhi, September 30, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on Wednesday, reviewing progress in India-US relations and discussing ways to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
During the conversation, the two leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation across important sectors including trade, defence, energy and critical technologies , according to the Indian Prime Minister’s Office.
Modi and Trump reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and agreed to remain in close contact as both countries work to expand cooperation across multiple areas.
The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international developments. The Prime Minister’s Office said their discussions included ongoing efforts aimed at promoting global peace and security.
The conversation comes at an important time for economic relations between New Delhi and Washington. India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is visiting the United States from September 29 to October 5, where discussions are underway on a proposed India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement as well as an interim trade arrangement.
Goyal is scheduled to interact with US officials and business representatives during the visit. India has said it is seeking a balanced and mutually beneficial trade agreement between the two countries.
India and the United States have been holding negotiations for months over their trade relationship. While talks have continued, differences remain on some issues, including tariffs and market access. Earlier in September, India raised concerns with Washington over US tariff measures linked to India's purchases of Russian oil.
The latest conversation between Modi and Trump signals continued high-level engagement between the two governments as they work on economic, strategic and security cooperation.
Both countries have expanded ties in recent years across defence, technology, energy and trade. Modi and Trump had also met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France in June 2026, where they reviewed progress in the India-US strategic partnership and discussed bilateral trade negotiations.
With trade negotiations continuing and senior-level engagements taking place on both sides, the latest phone conversation keeps attention focused on the next steps in India-US relations.
