Amritsar, October 12, 2026: The investigation into the shooting of Government Railway Police Assistant Sub-Inspector Sukhchain Singh took a major turn on Monday after an accused linked to the case was injured during police action in the Ajnala area of Amritsar district.

Police have identified the injured accused as Sahib Singh alias Guri. According to the police account, he is among three suspects arrested in connection with the October 4 attack on ASI Sukhchain Singh.

The latest incident unfolded when police were taking the accused to an area connected with the earlier shooting as part of the continuing investigation. Police said the purpose of the visit was to verify circumstances connected with the crime and reconstruct parts of the sequence of events.

According to investigators, the accused allegedly attempted to seize a weapon from a police officer during the exercise and tried to attack the accompanying team. Police personnel responded, during which the accused suffered a bullet injury to his leg.

He was subsequently taken to Civil Hospital, Ajnala, for treatment. Police said his condition was stable following the incident.

The development is linked to the October 4 attack on Sukhchain Singh, who is posted with the Government Railway Police in Amritsar. He was travelling home on his motorcycle after completing duty when assailants riding a motorcycle allegedly followed him near Jagdev Khurd village in the Ajnala area.

The attackers opened fire before leaving the area. Sukhchain Singh suffered a bullet injury to his arm but survived the attack and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police launched an investigation immediately after the shooting, examining CCTV footage, technical evidence and the possible movements of those involved. Different angles were considered as investigators tried to determine who planned the attack and what prompted it.

The probe has since resulted in the arrest of three suspects. Police are examining the alleged role of each person separately and are working to establish the full sequence of events before and after the attack.

Investigators are also examining the motive behind the shooting. Earlier in the investigation, personal and family-related disputes were among the possibilities being examined, while police had maintained that no angle would be ruled out until the evidence was fully assessed.

Monday’s police action adds another stage to the investigation, but the circumstances surrounding the encounter remain based on the police version and will form part of the official record and subsequent legal proceedings.

The accused named in the case remain entitled to due legal process, and allegations against them will have to be established through evidence before a court.

Police are continuing the investigation to determine whether any additional individuals were involved in planning, assisting or carrying out the attack on ASI Sukhchain Singh.
