Chandigarh, September 30, 2026: Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has resigned from the post of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president, setting the stage for a major leadership change in the state Congress ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
Warring, who is also the Member of Parliament from Ludhiana, had been heading the Punjab Congress since April 2022. His exit comes at a time when the party is preparing its organisational and electoral strategy for the upcoming Assembly polls.
The Congress leadership is now expected to announce Warring’s successor shortly. Several senior Punjab leaders have been discussed within political circles for the state president’s post, although no new PPCC chief had been formally announced at the time of publication.
The leadership change follows weeks of consultations within the Punjab unit. Senior party leaders and office-bearers had been sharing feedback about organisational preparations, coordination among different factions and the party’s strategy ahead of the state election.
Congress general secretary and Punjab affairs in-charge Sachin Pilot had also held a series of consultations with Punjab leaders as part of the party’s organisational review.
Warring had previously maintained that he would continue working for the Congress regardless of whether he remained state president. In August, he had publicly said he would not voluntarily step down but would accept any decision taken by the party leadership.
His departure marks a significant organisational development for the Punjab Congress, which is working to strengthen its structure and bring greater coordination among senior leaders before the Assembly election.
Warring took charge as Punjab Congress president following the party’s defeat in the 2022 Assembly elections. During his tenure, Congress won seven of Punjab’s 13 Lok Sabha seats in the 2024 general election.
Attention will now turn to the Congress leadership’s choice of the next Punjab president and how the new state chief shapes the party’s campaign and organisational strategy ahead of 2027.
A formal announcement from the party regarding Warring’s successor was awaited at the time of publication. The Congress’s official website had also not yet reflected the reported leadership change when checked late on September 30.
